One of the first architectural commissions of Lluís Domènech i Montaner was the Ateneu, built between 1884 and 1885. The building, which was raised on a former house, has been the headquarters for several cultural and political associations. It is now the library thanks to a complete restoration between 1991 and 1999. It is a building of moderate lines with wrought iron railings, a large number of red colour sgraffito and a large rose window with stained glass in the centre. Particularly noteworthy is the outer corner with the dome and the wrought iron dragon lightning conductor. |

The Casa Domènech is one of the four buildings built by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in Canet de Mar. The architect and his wife, Maria Roura, spent long periods in Canet de Mar and the house where they lived, Masia Rocosa, was too small for the family, as they had eight children. So Domènech i Montaner, with his son Pere and his son-in-law Francesc Guàrdia Vial, planned the Casa Domènech between 1918 and 1919. On the facade we can see two different treatments of the two sides of the building (commonplace in Domènech i Montaner's corner buildings). He placed balconies on the first floor of the Buscarons dry river, whereas in the Gavarra he chose the solution of lobulated windows with beautiful parteluz. Both these windows and a tribune on the corner could be understood as an interpretation of the Gothic style. It is interesting to see the different treatment of the materials above the ground. On the ground floor there is a large stone skirting followed by a smooth surface and brickwork at the top. The stone at the bottom is closely related to the river flooding. The stone had to preserve the building from water erosion. Between the Rocosa country house and the Domènech house there was a garden area which disappeared in work to condition the ground floor as a bank office between 1980 and 1983. The project to adapt the former building to the new needs was made by Roser Amadò and Lluís Domènech i Girbau. Apart from the disappearance of the garden, other interior alterations were made. Walls were knocked down and the floor was changed. However, we had been left with the chimneys, the original ceilings, the vegetable fibre work on the walls and the plaster sculptures of the collaborators of Domènech i Montaner. Visitors can but admire the former dining room decorated with ceramic ceiling tiles originally from Comillas church and the decorated chimney belonging to the Hospital de Sant Pau. On the first floor, there are still the stairs giving access to the second floor made of wood and the plaster throne of the Church of the Seminari in Comillas, and the modernist style bathroom that Lluís Domènech i Montaner planned for his wife. The Rocosa country house, which stands behind the Domènech house, was bought by the town hall in 1991 to be used to disseminate the works and life of the modernist architect. Some years later, the Town Hall exchanged the building with the banking institution that has an office in the Domènech house and after careful restoration work, the whole complex was opened as a museum in 1998 with the visit of the President of the Government of Catalonia, Jordi Pujol. |
![]() 1892 Lluís Domènech i Montaner Riera Sant Domènec, 1 |
A clearly modernist building conceived by Lluís Domènech i Montaner as a residence for Ricard de Capmany. The work was finished in 1892 and the house stands out for its brickwork, iron and ceramic. Ca la Bianga appears as a fantasy full of details and geometric forms that turn it into a castle or a church with its belltower |

![]() 1910 Pere Domènech i Roura Riera del Pinar, 12 |
Commissioned by the owners of the company to the architect Pere Domènech i Roura, it was opened in 1910. It seems to be inspired by the Romanesque churches thanks to the use of brickwork, the vaults in the roof and the large blind rose window with the name of the company. It is possible that a large part of the design is the work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner. |
![]() 1906 Emili Cabanyes Carrer Ample, 11 |
The Town Hall was built in 1906 thanks to donations from the Golart-Palau family. The architect was Emili Cabanyes, who traced sober lines along the building. However, there are certain historicist elements, such as the merlons on the facade. Inside, the most outstanding part is the plenary hall, with a profusely decorated ceiling. Office hours are from nine in the morning to two in the afternoon on working days. |
![]() 1896 Josep Puig i Cadafalch Jardins del Santuari de la Misericòrdia |
This green area was created in 1896 to accompany the Sanctuary of Mercy. This area also stands out for the combination of nature and modernist architecture. We find local Mediterranean plants alongside the restaurant building and monuments designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. In addition to the artistic works, the park is a very good place for families to go because it has a children's play area. |

The arrival of the americanos in Canet developed agricultural irrigation. In the second half of the 19th century, water mines began to be built to irrigate the former dry lands. One of the richest areas was the garden of the Busquets family, which also owned Villa Flora. Here six large fountains and the central bed were built with the designs by the modernist architect Eduard Ferrés. Now a large part of the former garden has been turned into a public park. |
![]() 1923 Rafael Masó Plaça Colomer |
Canet de Mar was an essential point of Catalan co-operativism. So much so that the first co-operative in the Spanish state was founded in Canet with the name of La Companyia. Around 1920, a new institution called La Canetenca decided to buy the land behind the church to turn it into the social premises and the shop. On the eastern side the building was built with designs by Rafael Masó, and it was decided to make a square on the western side. The premises, popularly known as the Odèon, was a hive of culture in the 70s and 80s thanks to the presence of many artists. The square also has a children's play area and is lined by numerous banana trees that give shade in the summer. |
![]() 1933 Pere Domènech i Roura Riera Buscarons, 101 |
Work started on the Market Square in 1933 in answer to one of the great calls of the traders in the early 20th century. The square was raised following sober and classical design plans by Pere Domènech i Roura, which can be seen in the rectangular windows and Doric columns. The market opens every morning from Monday to Saturday and on Wednesday is surrounded by the street market. |
![]() 1914 Josep Puig i Cadafalch Parc de la Misericòrdia |
Made according to plans by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1914. In the eastern part we see an arch that gathers three windows protected by modernist railings. Brickwork is present throughout in combination with the smooth walls and bluish ceramic pieces. The entrance door is surrounded and finished in a midpoint arch. |
![]() 1910-1925 Eduard Ferrés i Puig Riera Gavarra s/n |
This is a good example of the houses built by the americanos. Ramiro Busquets, a landowner and industrialist, commissioned Eduard Ferrés i Puig to build a summer house. The work was finished in 1925 and has the style of large agricultural modernist buildings with its elegance and great attention to details. We can see this in the wrought iron of the railings and the sgraffito inside. In the surrounding gardens, the Busquets built a house for the servants, a store and stables. The building now houses several municipal dependencies. |
