HERITAGE > LL. DOMČNECH I MONTANER HOUSE MUSEUM

Artist Museum:

The Lluís Domènech i Montaner house museum is a complex which includes the 17th-century Can Rocosa, and the Domènech house, built between 1918 and 1919 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, his son Pere Domènech and his son-in-law, Francesc Guàrdia.

The whole complex was opened as a museum in 1991 after careful restoration work.

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was born in Barcelona in 1849, the city where, along with Canet de Mar he developed a large part of his architectural, intellectual and political career.  His connection with Canet de Mar is through his mother, Maria Montaner, who was the daughter of the Casa Forta, and also his wife, Maria Roura, who was born in this town of the Maresme.

The House Museum is intended to introduce the house in Canet de Mar were the architect spent long periods in the town, particularly in the summer.  In his office of the Can Rocosa he planned such well-known buildings as the Cafè Restaurant and the Hotel Internacional of the Universal Exhibition of 1888, the Palau de la Música, the Hospital de Sant Pau and Comillas University, amongst other things.  It must also be stressed that he built several buildings in Canet de Mar, apart from his own home.  On the Sant Domènec dry river we can see the Ateneu and the Casa Roura and the forests of Pedracastell contain the Castle of Santa Florentina.

It is very interesting thanks to the fact that Domènech i Montaner asked his workers for copies of the works.  We therefore find the decoration of the Fonda Espanya in his study, the use of plaster models from Comillas University or the presence of curious pottery around the house.  Apart from his architectural side, it also stores other fields of the architect, and especially his political and publishing life. Lluís Domènech i Montaner was one of the driving forces behind political catalanism and here we can see a large part of his correspondence and his studies on Catalan heraldry.  In the field of printing, the architect designed and directed large works such as the Enciclopedia General del Arte.
